Hours and Appointments at CAPS

During the academic year:

  • CAPS Receptionists are generally available by phone from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Counseling hours (including crisis intervention) are Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8:45am-4:15pm and Tuesday and Thursday: 9:45am-4:15pm.  We also run some early evening groups.  See our group page for information.
  • Closed weekends, holidays and summer months

Please check the Student Calendar 2019-20 for our schedule when classes are not in session as hours may change during holiday and winter breaks.

Regular Counseling Appointments

Please make a first-time ("intake") appointment by calling (707) 826-3236. If you continue with individual therapy at CAPS, your counselor will work out a schedule with you.
For your fist appointment of the academic year, arrange to complete your intake forms at least 30  minutes prior to your actual appointment time.

If you need to cancel an appointment, please call as soon as you know you will be unable to make it as a no-show fee will be charged to your account if you do not cancel within 24 hours.

Crisis Appointments

If you are in crisis (e.g., this is a psychological emergency), and CAPS is currently open, please call us at 707.826.3236 and ask for an appointment with the on-call therapist. If this is a life-threatening emergency, please call 911.

Emergency Care After Hours and on Holiday Closures

  • You can talk with a therapist by phone for support, information, and crisis intervention through CAPS at (707) 826-3236.
  • You can call Humboldt County Mental Health 24 Hour Crisis Line at (707) 445-7715.
  • You can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
  • You can visit a local Emergency Department.  This is the best course of action if you require medical intervention.
  • You can call 911.  This is the best course of action if you have an immediate safety risk that does not require immediate medical intervention.  The police offer the fastest and best assistance if you have immediate intention or plans to seriously harm yourself or someone else.

     No-Show Charge

A no-show fee of $20 will be charged to your account each time you do not call to cancel (707 826-3236) within 24 hours of the appointment and either do not show up for the appointment or are sufficiently late that the appointment cannot be used.
